The Belgian Tripel is just one of the many famous beer styles that Belgians have created during their historic relationship with alcoholic beverages. This recipe has its roots in old-world traditions where Trappist monks would fund their monasteries through the non-profit production of beer. Tripels are in the Trappist or Abbey beer family, being one of the styles originally brewed by monastic breweries, though they’re now a staple for many breweries. They’re pale in color (someday I’m going to learn why there’s a weird color oscillation in Abbey-style beers), and relatively strong, usually coming in at the 8–9% ABV range. The Belgian Tripel is the youngest of the ale trilogy (dubbel, tripel, and quadruple) that form the very heart of Belgium’s high art of brewing. Born less than 85 years ago, this apex of the brewers craft was the genius of highly esteemed secular brewer Hendrik Verlinden of Drie Linden brewery.

Taste: The Belgian Tripel is a spicy, strong ale, typically pale or golden in color, with a pronounced ABV from 7% to 12%.
